Threat from cyber-attacks is now at the top of people’s consciousness as vulnerabilities at home and in business have been exploited often causing incalculable losses. Hackers have breached half of the 28 million small businesses in the United States, according to the 2016 State of SMB Cybersecurity Report.
Cyberattacks costs the global economy over US$400 billion per year, according to estimates by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. In 2013, some 3,000 companies in the United States had their systems compromised by criminals, the Center reports.
Internationally, Governments and businesses are responding to the increasingly hostile environment. One of many events was the Summit on Cybersecurity and Consumer Protection at Stanford University in February 2015. It was attended by senior US political leaders, CEOs and representatives from computer security companies, major retailers, law enforcement and technical experts, to “collaborate and explore partnerships that will help develop the best ways to bolster our cyber security.” It basic principles to fight cyber attacks is to leverage shared missions, focus on unique strengths, constant evolution, and the protection of privacy and civil liberties.
